Industry Leaders Honored
Chicago — Two industry stalwarts were honored with major awards during the NCA’s annual Industry Awards Breakfast today at the SWEETS & SNACKS EXPO.
NCA Chairman Michael Gilmore presented The Lou Spector Golden Candy Dish Award to Don LaMere, of Harvey-Winchell Co., Inc.
Serving as president of the brokerage until 2002, LaMere has also been honored with numerous Broker of the Year awards. His candy career began in 1960 working as a Brach’s salesman, and in 1976, he was one of the founders of Harvey-Winchell. His wife Karen accepted the Golden Candy Dish on his behalf.
“What Don loved most about this industry was the people and the teamwork that he said was the perfect secret to success,” Karen LaMere said. “When we told Don about this award, he said: ’This is really something!’”
Dr. B.E. Atkinson, Jr., of Judson-Atkinson Candies, Inc., received the Doc Reed Silver Candy Dish Award, presented to him by his son, Eric Atkinson, who was recognized with the honor in 2008.
He has served on the NCA’s board of directors and as a member of its legislative and research committees.
After attending Southwestern Medical School and working as a general practitioner in private practice for many years, Atkinson purchased the San Antonio-based Judson Candy Co in 1983. He renamed it Judson-Atkinson Candies and currently serves as president.
“It's not everyday a man has the privilege to present an award like this to his father,” said Eric Atkinson. “With a Texas-size helping of pleasure and pride, this is for you, Dad.”
